Women in India have to endure many ordeals in their day-to-day lives. For centuries women of all generations have had to struggle to be treated as equals. Gender inequality is reflected in India’s low ranking on the Gender Inequality Index released by the UNDP, in 2016 India ranked 130 out of 146. Furthermore, UNDP’s Human Development Index (HDI) 2015 highlighted that with respect to gender inequality, only Afghanistan fares worse than India among South Asian countries. On every parameter of the gender inequality index (GII), India lags behind even both of its neighbouring countries, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
We vowed to bridge the gap created due to centuries of oppression. This is how Rooh – Awakening Women’s soul was started. Rooh meaning the spirit, is a strategically developed, three-tier project that aims at strengthening a woman’s demeanor towards life itself. Beginning from the roots, the first step is to provide remedial education to their children so that they do not live a similar life; second is to provide exposure along with professional training, and third is equipping them with a platform where their skilled products can be exhibited and sold. Women are taught professional and vocational skills focussed in stitching and tailoring in order to assist them in generating self-employment and a means of income in an effort to make them self-reliant and empowered. Renowned professionals of the country personally deliver these workshops while a few have also hired these women to work under them. The products curated by them are showcased in various stores such as – Shahnaz with Love, Study by Janak, Varun Bahl Designer store. All the proceeds are handed to the women who crafted the product.
The program is also inclusive of their needs surrounding sanitation and menstrual hygiene. Health awareness campaigns for women are organized every now and then which range from the importance of iodine in salt to spreading awareness about causes of Breast Cancer. All the health awareness and camps are done in association with various other partners.
