A Light of Hope

The fast pacing world is always on the edge. But imagine a day without electricity in our houses. Even imagination is difficult. When we visited the Sindhi Basticentre which is located in one of the finest realms of Delhi for the first time, the conditions were woefully deplorable. The residents in the area have been residing for more than 30 years. They had no access to electricity. The plight they live in has been frightful. There was no single bulb light in the area and no street light. There was absolute darkness that the community was living in. Earlier they had limited source of electricity supply and it was stolen from nearby poles. However, the even bigger question was ‘how are kids expected to study when there is no light?’ or ‘How can holistic learning, and development be expected to take place?’
Lakshyam has been working for the upliftment of this particular area for the past five years. After looking at the degrading conditions, we decided to ensure there is an adequate electricity supply to each house. After all, it is the ultimate basic necessity for human existence. We contacted several local government officials to help us install the electricity connection in the area. Finally, the long relinquish struggle and darkness came to an end. It was indeed a sight to watch the people of the community smile after acknowledging the fact that for the first time in thirty years they have access to light in their houses. They now have electricity supply along with legally installed meters. The community gets bills every month to their jhugis. This in turn acts as address proof which earlier was missing for them.. We hope their lives too shall be lead to better lit paths with a motto of 3 E’s that is Education, Erudition and Empowerment.
