Fashion for a cause

‘Fashion for a Cause’ is one of Lakshyam’s most illustrious and thriving initiatives that is held every year. Our annual fundraising initiative has a twofold objective that aims at garnering support from the society, and raising funds for the existing programs and the ones in the pipeline. Children from our centres walk hand-in-hand with the most prestigious Fashion Icons of our country. Owing to the acclaimed status of the guests, we are able to raise awareness in the public eye of the issues plaguing our society and the urgent need for each one of us to do our bit.  Every year, we not only try to make it a bigger success that spreads the message of Lakshyam, but also ensure that our kids experience immense exposure and confidence from the initiative, and have a gala time. We wholeheartedly thank every individual that takes part in the fashion shows, and thus enabling us to advance our endeavours.

Music and dance performances by the kids of Lakshyam who wore Being Human T shirts, and interactions with the superstar was a dream come true for the giddy young faces. Salman Khan and Being Human donated a generous amount to mark the occasion as a rewarding one. And the Lakshyam kids walked in Being Human T shirts along with the models.

Rohit Roy, Cyrus Sahukar, Yuri Suri, Tusshar Kapoor, Kulraj Randhawa and Claudia happily participated at the second year of the initiative. While Tusshar and Kulraj brought along drums and Bollywood music that thronged at the venue, the celebrities fashionably walked the ramp along with the children of Lakshyam. The thrill of walking a ramp, that too with such acclaimed celebrities, was visible on the awestruck faces of the kids. They enjoyed the event to the hilt and couldn’t wait to come back the next year. This is here we started the concept, where women of substance walked the ramp rather than model with the designer label Satya Paul.

Lakshyam in association with Prama Jyoti Foundation organised the 6th annual show, themed around ‘Empowering the Girl Child Today, to Building Women Leaders of Tomorrow’. It was even more special as renowned actor Boman Irani graced the event with his presence. Like every year, our purpose was increasing awareness and resource mobilisation. This year the idea behind the event was to work for the upliftment of our new centre in Vasant Kunj which is in Sindhi Basti slum wherein the majority of population is involved in begging and selling toys in traffic signals. The number of children going to a government school is just 5 percent and the basic facilities in the form of where they live is bare minimum, till the extent that they have to buy water for drinking or washing or bathing.

The fashion show got the sheen when celebrated personalities from all walks of life walked the ramp for the designers like Reynu Taandon, Poonam Bhagat, Vandy Mehra, Payal Jain, Niki Mahajan, Varun Bahl and Payal Bahl. We wish to come back soon next year with a bang …

Laal Seb

Fashion for Cause 1

Laal Seb, a short film made by Lakshyam children living in the slums of Delhi on their true story. Lakshyam undertook the project to involve the students of ‘Butterfly: Child Welfare & Education’ into constructive learning through varied electronic mediums that trigger their creativity and help them learn some of the basic nuances of filmmaking. The movie titled “Laal Seb” has been the artistic child birthed from the creative minds of the children studying in Lakshyam School. Made by and for the children, it is based on the unfortunate realities faced by the children of slums and their journey towards Education – the everyday trials and tribulations captured with innocence and absolute honesty. Conceptualized and scripted by the children, the Film showcases a day in the life of a young girl living in the slum, who has a school assignment to complete (related to a Laal Seb – Red Apple) and how such a regular activity brings along struggles that no child should experience. The movie was Screened and launched in PVR cinemas along with core supporters of Lakshyam.

Periodt Campaign

Lakshyam organized a social media campaign ‘PeriodT – Making periods a non-issue’ with a belief and idea to normalize talking about periods. On the occasion of National Period Day, we launched this campaign on all our social media handles urging our audience to describe a myth related to periods that they want to burst. We witnessed some shocking statistics related to the impact of menstruation on our country:

– 23 million girls drop out every year due to periods.

– Around 42.4% of women don’t have access to any kind of sanitary pads

– 87% of women still believe in taboos and doesn’t enter the kitchen and temples due to periods

– 56% of women are shy to use pads in public

-64% of women burns or buries their used pads

– No access to menstrual hygiene is the 5th biggest killer in the world.

Through this campaign, Lakshyam wanted to put a full stop and debunk all the myths surrounding menstrual hygiene. With this campaign, Lakshyam also aimed to raise funds to spread awareness about menstrual hygiene, distribute safe menstrual absorbents and help girls continue their schooling and become financially independent. The idea of the campaign was originated when we saw our women in rural areas of Jharkhand & Madhya Pradesh considering themselves impure & during our skill training program, they would not touch the sewing machines saying they are untouchables! We were happy to see that more than 500 individuals shared their entries via messages to stand with the cause. Not just the individuals but schools & colleges participated as institutions followed by 10 digital media influencers.
