Butterfly - Child Welfare and Education

Unable to afford basic human needs like water, food, and shelter, parents are left with no choice but to catapult their children into the same unjust world of child labor that they have grown up in. Few can barely save money and admit their child into a school, hence living a life of struggle and injustice.

The butterfly is a symbol of freedom. The freedom from the clutches of inequality and child labor. Lakshyam (NGO in India for children’s education) vowed to right these wrongs and ensures that the human rights of these children are no longer violated. Butterfly- Child Welfare and Education program aims to provide comprehensive assistance to impoverished children through a learning program focusing on textual and practical knowledge as well as personality development.

The attention and efforts of Lakshyam focus on increasing the school enrollment at the primary level and reducing school drop-out rates, particularly for girls.
Lakshyam believes that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty.

Basic Education is the human right of every individual as laid down in the International Human Rights Law by the United Nations.

Our project Rooh (Awakening Women’s Soul) empowers women to generate self-employment and a means of income through imparting vocational training and professional skills. We help women overcome their worst fears and become independent. They are trained in different fields according to their interests and involved in a variety of activities which include making Handicraft Products. These handmade products are made mostly out of waste and converted to really useful items. For the women making these products is a symbol of pride that they have learned to be on their own and proved themselves that they are self-sufficient.
By purchasing these hand made products you can make a small contribution in raising the spirits and confidence of the less-privileged women who make them specially for us.
The profit that comes from selling these products is given to the women who create it and some of it is utilized in the programs of Lakshyam related to education and empowerment.

Lakshyam Toy Library

We all have fond memories of playing with toys in our childhood, be it a plastic soldier, remote control car, favorite jigsaw puzzle, or superhero/princess figurine. Children of slum dwellers, street children or kids staying in remote villages often are devoid of this experience altogether. They have to settle for makeshift toys made from tyres, plastic bottle, sticks, rope, etc. whatsoever limited things they have around them.

Education on its own can not foster holistic child development, Toys play a crucial role as well. They help the children in exploring and making sense of the world around them. They boost the child’s imagination and creativity skills. They allow the child to emotionally relate to others through imaginative play and role-playing with friends. When children are feeling distressed, they often find comfort in their favorite toys.

Rooh - Awakening Women's Soul

To think of living with almost no control and freedom over one’s own life is quite a suffocating thing. Women in India have to endure many ordeals in their day-to-day lives. For centuries, women of all generations have had to struggle to be treated as equals. At present, thousands of women in India are marginalized and poorly treated within society resulting in a lack of the skills and confidence needed to live fulfilled and respectable lives. Currently, a staggering 245 million women across India are unable to read or write. This severely limits their position and opportunities available to them within the society.

That is why Lakshyam – NGO for women empowerment, stepped in to create an impact by changing the lives of women by creating set goals and training sessions to make them self-sustainable in life.

FASHION FOR CAUSE

‘Fashion for a Cause’ is one of Lakshyam’s most illustrious and thriving initiatives that is held every year. Our annual fundraising initiative has a twofold objective that aims at garnering support from the society, and raising funds for the existing programs and the ones in the pipeline. Children from our centres walk hand-in-hand with the most prestigious Fashion Icons of our country. Owing to the acclaimed status of the guests, we are able to raise awareness in the public eye of the issues plaguing our society and the urgent need for each one of us to do our bit.  Every year, we not only try to make it a bigger success that spreads the message of Lakshyam, but also ensure that our kids experience immense exposure and confidence from the initiative, and have a gala time. We wholeheartedly thank every individual that takes part in the fashion shows, and thus enabling us to advance our endeavours.

Periodt Campaign

Lakshyam organized a social media campaign ‘PeriodT – Making periods a non-issue’ with a belief and idea to normalize talking about periods. On the occasion of National Period Day, we launched this campaign on all our social media handles urging our audience to describe a myth related to periods that they want to burst. We witnessed some shocking statistics related to the impact of menstruation on our country:

  • 23 million girls drop out every year due to periods.
  • Around 42.4% of women don’t have access to any kind of sanitary pads
  • 87% of women still believe in taboos and don’t enter the kitchen and temples due to periods
  • 56% of women are shy to use pads in public
  • 64% of women burn or bury their used pads
  • No access to menstrual hygiene is the 5th biggest killer in the world.

Through this campaign, Lakshyam wanted to put a full stop and debunk all the myths surrounding menstrual hygiene. With this campaign, Lakshyam also aimed to raise funds to spread awareness about menstrual hygiene, distribute safe menstrual absorbents and help girls continue their schooling and become financially independent. The idea of the campaign was originated when we saw our women in rural areas of Jharkhand & Madhya Pradesh considering themselves impure & during our skill training program, they would not touch the sewing machines saying they are untouchables! We were happy to see that more than 500 individuals shared their entries via messages to stand with the cause. Not just the individuals but schools & colleges participated as institutions followed by 10 digital media influencers.
